Microsoft Project Server 2007 on Server 2008 R2

We recently had a request for a clean install of Microsoft Project Server 2007. As we are currently, where possible, installing only Server 2008 R2 boxes, it was agreed to install Project on an R2 Box.

Having looked at the pre-requisites as follows, this looked to be a simple install.

Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 or Office SharePoint Server with recent updates

Windows Server 2008 requires an updated version of Office SharePoint Server 2007 and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0.

Application Server role

The Application Server role must be installed on the computer.

Internet Information Services 7.0

The Web Server (IIS) role must be installed on the computer with the Application Server Foundation and Web Server (IIS) Support role services.

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0

Installing the Application Server role installs the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 by default on Windows Server 2008.

The new Server was built, all updates installed and the pre-requisites installed as stated, but when we came to install Project 2007 we were presented with a warning that Project 2007 is not compatible with this version of Windows and only had the option to cancel.

To get around this issue, a minimum of Service pack 1 is required for Project 2007. As this cannot be ignored and then service packed afterwards, some investigation was required. It turns out that it is an easy enough fix as follows.

  • Extract/copy the install of Project server to a local folder on the server (or share etc.)

  • Download the latest service pack for Office Server.

  • Extract this to the Updates folder in your local copy of Project Server using the /extract switch i.e. "officeserver2007sp2-kb953334-x64-fullfile-en-us /extract:C:\yourpath\Updates"
Now re-run Setup, and all will progress OK.
